? Early rounds best of 5
? Semi finals best of 7
? Final best of 9
wtf!!!

this competition was always best of 9's, making it a worthwhile competition!

who's brainwave was it it screw it up and make it the same as the singles?

i don't get out of bed for a best of 5 and that day won't be any different so count me out!
it completely de-values this event!

This is the same as it was last year, the distances may have been changed last year depending on the numbers who were there but they were only changed on the day with the agreement of all the players involved

that's crap...
http://www.croydo...ad_id=1289

later stages were increased but earlier matches were always minimum best of 9's

'matches from the first round onwards were made best of 15. Prelims were kept best of 9

Prelims
Steve Aldridge 5 Gary Swettenham 4
Cliff Mills 5 Keely Clarke 0

Quarter Finals
Steve Aldridge 8 Mark Miller 7
Kyle Pickett 8 Tom Telford 2
Hugh Telford 8 Cliff Mills 5
Roger Simpson 8 Vennie Goldbourne 3

Semi Finals
Kyle Pickett 8 Steve Aldridge 5
Hugh Telford 8 Roger Simpson 3

Final
Hugh Telford 5 Kyle Pickett 8'

and i know for a fact they were minimum best of 9s the year before when the event started!

The competitions have been advertised in the same way this year as they were last year

I will not be running the division 1 competition Mark Halsey will be so if Mark decides that he wants longer format matches and the players are in agreement on the day then the matches will be longer

Could it be a posibilty to combine say Div 1 and 2 together if there's a lack of numbers such as last year?

You know me, I never delete emails, so I looked this up.

You're right that the 2008 comp was best of 9's but last year's was exactly as this one is advertised. I'm just guessing, as I can't remember the 2008 comp (maybe too many beers) but with a good turnout and best of 9's all the way, that would make a very long day/night, so it was probably whittled down to ensure the comp was finished before closing time.

As Paul said, if the turnout isn't great on the day and the players agree, then extend the matches but it seems crazy to promise people long matches and then have to chop it down if too many people turn up to get it done in time. I've learnt that from the Croydon Singles League - Promise what you can deliver and improve if you can. Don't make promises you can't keep.

Oh, and Paul, Count me in for Div.2, by the way !

Hi Tom

Mark is going to run some of these comps this year we did discuss holding some of them on the same day (mainly along lines of div 4 & 5) but was decided to leave them seperate this year but could review next year

I am hopeful of the numbers being higher this year, I think last year was lower because they were held on Sundays

I won't be attending but for what it's worth I make Andy right about the length of matches in division 1 at least. In best of 5 you could only get one shot but plenty of matches can be won or lost from 3-0. If I was around on 1st May I wouldn't consider entering if it were best of 5.

Cheers, I agree with Andy and Phil in that if you extent the matches it will improve the comp. as well as draw in more players...

Did the Div 1 comp happen on Saturday? Is the Div 2 still happening on the 8th? If so what time is it starting?
