The Imperials were playing the Slates in the 2nd stage of the league cup,Darren Porter phones Lloyd Barnes asks the score to be told we are 4-1 up he then tells Lloyd Bloodhounds have drawn 5-5 with the Prop so we can no longer qualify,at this we are deflated and start to bash the balls about in the end drawing 5-5.
imagine our surprize when we find out the true result of bloodhounds match was7-3 to the Prop meaning we could still have qualified.
Darren can please let us know why you lied to us as we are rather upset.

sounds pretty dodgy to me but is not something I am surprised at as we had been victims of this type of behaviour in the past.

Concentrating on your own game would stop this from happening.

For me each frame is just as important as the last so I want to win each one whether the match is an end of season nothing match and we are 7-1 up or in the second stage of the League Cup.

It is poor form to give false information but then it's also a weakness to let other people effect your game.

I know we spoke about this last night, but I hadn't spoken to Darren by that point. I had a long chat with him, and this is his version:

He claims to have phoned Lloyd on a couple of occasions. The last score that was relayed to me via Darren (although I wasn't overly interested) was that the Imperials were losing 3-1. He also claims that he did not lie about our score - he said to Lloyd that we 'should have' got a 5-5. This is also a comment that I myself posted on the web when I reviewed our game against the Prop.

I know that Darren has tried to phone Lloyd this morning, thus far without success. All I can conclude is that there were misunderstandings from both sides - Darren had no reason to make up that the Slates were leading 3-1, as they started the evening on the same number of points as the Imps and so could still qualify themselves.

Bad sportsmanship this may be (Coming from the same guy that apparently wants to claim frames for late starts - nice :?: )
however, if you believe what someone tells you in the knowledge that it is the last game then more fool you, surely you have to carry on & try till the end just in-case your being told porkys

Lesson learnt the hard way if you ask me

Ps - we heard the hotshots were 4-4 & they won 7-3 (We still tried to win the match, because we have heard it all before)

In my opinion its best not to know the scores during your match if you are relying on other results incase of false info as it appears. It can only put you off and this is a prime example. We were also relying on results from other games but chose not to find out until after our match was over.

I seem to remember a few years ago Man City keeping the ball in the corner at Anfield because they thought the point they had was enough. It wasn't and they were relegated. Rule 1 - don't believe what you hear / read.

After the dust has settled you're probably right, that we should have pushed on and ignored what Darren was saying. But I didn't even cosider that he would lie, it was gone 10:45 and we were playing in Lewisham with only 5 frames completed. I know I dont speak for everyone in the team when I say I was in a rush to get out of there as some players did lose fairly competently.lol. However, had I of known that at 4 -1 up we were still in with a chance of going through to the 1/4 finals (something we have never achieved before) I would have put a lot more thought in to my frame and I'm sure a few others would have done too.

Whether it is good or bad sportsmanship is to be discussed but as far as I'm concerned calling people up and telling them they're out of the competition half way through a match is pushing the boundries a little. I know I wouldn't do it!

if it was intentional then maybe it was but as teach said its easy to misunderstand things that are said on the phone sometimes and you can easy pick up the wrong end of the stick. ! but at then end of the day i think the advice given above is spot on, you just play on regardless wat people tell you so you have learnt a lesson there! at least darren has tried calling to explain his comments so credit to him for that.

If the Imps are letting that kind of stuff get to them then let them get promoted this season. You have to deal with that kind of talk week in week out in Div One. Don't believe all you hear. And to listen to is to pure amateurish on their part.

As for Darren Porter, he does and has in the past played the gamesmanship card more than once (we have written evidence). I don't think its bad sportsmanship though. Its purely a form of gamesmanship - if of course he said what he said.

The end result is until the results are in registered and are in black & white then whatever info you get fed it means nothing. I'm sure over the closing 4 weeks of the 1st Division looking at the title chase and the promotion battle there will be numerous text messages flying around the venues and teams - bottom line is you have to keep playing for an end result.
