Farley Dukes 2 Pond Wheatsheaf 9

Reasonably enjoyable evening, somewhat marred by an extremely unreasonable attempted intervention by the League secretary, to authorise our opponents to field a player who had not even signed for them. Of course I refused to allow this as it contravenes the League rules. I was then threatened that if I did not allow the ringer's participation we would be deducted the points anyway. As Mark would not answer his mobile,I can only inform him now that ,should he carry out his promise to deduct the points from us,I will have no alternative but to withdraw our team from the League with immediate effect. I sincerely hope that this action will not be necessary. Good Luck to our opponents for the remainder of the season !!

I will not use this forum to air any further information re this matter but you can be rest assured Mr Flynn that I will report in full exactly what happened last night at the general meeting next thursday and perhaps you would have the common decency to attend for your right of reply. I appreciate that you have already submitted your apology but if you feel so strongly about this then lets do this the correct way. Ohhh by the way, a "ringer" is a player that plays under an assumed name and I believe that Dave Truan from last night was in fact Dave Truan in person who is not a registered player with any other team at this moment in time.

Mark, I have searched my statement meticulously and I can't find my "apology",mainly because it doesn't exist. I have nothing to apologise for !! You are delusional ! You in fact showed a complete lack of respect and empathy. Thank you for explaining the definition of a ringer which I found to be most informative. You really do need to curb your bombastic attitude to all and sundry who happen to disagree with your statements and opinions. I couldn't believe your immature failure to answer your phone when I rang back. It was laughable. I was not going to attend next week's meeting but now I wouldn't miss it for the world ! Look forward to seeing you next Thursday.

Mr Flynn, first and foremost the "Apology" that I refer to is in fact your recent letter to me offering your "apologies" for not being able to attend the meeting but I will disregard that notification now and look forward to seeing you there. I am not going to enter into exchanging argumentative dialogue with yourself or making slanderous accusations re derogatory insults and remarks on this website and will deal with this in the appropriate manner at the meeting.

I fail to see what needs to be discussed in the meeting, it clearly states in the rules that a player must register at least six days prior to be eligible to play therefor dave truan could not sign on the night and play in the match. Are you saying these rules are wrong mark?..

This definitely needs to be clarified.

Barry is right - the rules state that there should be a clearance period of six days. However, my team have benefited in the past from last minute signings (verified by Mark) to ensure that a team can be put together on the night (usually with details and a signature sent via email).

Can definitiely see the problem from both sides...

perhaps the league should copy what happens at interleague,as far as i know a player can be signed up on the night as long as the relavent paper work is recieved within a week.
certainly helps teams that turn up short.lol

People will always say rules are rules, and they have every right but I would much rather the rules were relaxed to enable on the night signings.

I would much rather play against a full team, than I would play against a team that were short, but something could have been done about it. After all it is just pool and a night out with the lads.

I obviously have no idea if the team wanting to sign a player up where short or otherwise. That said if the rule was changed it really wouldn't matter.

Theres a Half Yearly AGM coming isnt there. Discussion point to add.

Pat i am still in shock that you refused to let me sign up to play last night as the dukes only had 4 players & needed help so i offered to sign up to make them have 5
you then had a team meeting quoted rules are rules etc
crazy it is a pub pool lge not the crucible, good to see a sense of fair play and all

I guess getting 2 free frames is better than risk playing them ag a player who has not played in the league for over 3 years....a little embarrassing i'd say & then to actually post about it like some sort of victim.......classic

David, I, like our leader, am not prepared to reveal the whole story at this juncture. I feel certain that a satisfactory conclusion to this unfortunate event can be achieved and maybe even the prevention of a repetition. I look forward to playing against you when we meet the Dukes in the return fixture !!

Shaggy has said pretty much what I was going to say. It's a pub league after all.

Im along the standpoint ov the rules r the rules but that bein said I do believe sum rules can b waved by consent n a gentlemans agreement as long as there is no ripple effect I.e medals involved...wat I do think is itsa little bit naughty sum1 playing by the rules n then getting slated for it as it is there right, maybe not always a gentlemanly thing to do ina friendly league but they do av the right...

I kinda agree with Jacko on this.

I don't think you can punish a team for playing by the rules, even if some people may think it's unsporting.

We have signed players on the night before now, but have informed the other team who have agreed to this. Had the other team refused & quoted the rules as their reason then i guess we wouldn't have played the person in question, which seems to be what's happened at this match.

I guess no one knows the real reason at this stage why the Pond refused to let Dave play, maybe some revenge for a past "Eden" experience from the old days, i have always found the Pond a very friendly amicable team & guess they had their reasons, but the one main thing i see with this is that they played by the rules & find it very difficult to see how they can be punished for it.

Not doing anything next Thursday, so may well go to the AGM now, could be interesting finding out the whole story as Mark & Pat don't want to discuss it on the web site, very wise & understandable too.

We were allowed to sign players on the night in the Redhill and Reigate league, and we took full advantage. We drafted in anyone from the Croydon league who happened to be available on a thursday night. In one season we must have got through about 30 players! I'm sure if we did the same here we would be treated to cameo appearances from stars of Surrey and London county teams by the coachload. Maybe even a few pros. It would be a fight to see who could sign the biggest name for one night only. Who could object to that?

Eden player enters a pool hall for the first time in three years and Pat within 10 minutes looses the plot. Maybe the real reason was to hide the embarrassment of his team now plying their trade in the second tier of Croydon pool. ;)
