Thread subject: CroydonPool.com - The CDPL Online Community :: Best food venue in the league

It has been suggested that there should be some recognition of the quality that venues maintain in the provision of food for their teams. I'm not sure how to go about it but I certainly support the sentiment. The problem is that not everybody eats at every venue and some venues might be under-represented on this website. Nevertheless, our members are all we have to go by so we could at least start with some suggestions on this thread, leading to a poll on suggested venues.

I would like to start by proposing The Folly, where new managers Steve and Julie provide a variety of home cooked meals which to my knowledge have included lamb and chicken curries and shepherd's pie. I was privileged to have sampled the lamb curry a few weeks ago and can honestly report that it was sensational. Self-served directly from the pot, with proper plates and cutlery and plenty for everyone. I know that anyone who has eaten there recently will have this venue very high on their list. Its certainly top of mine right now.

Anyone for any more...?

i have to agree with you, the folly has got to be the best. One of the nicest tasting home cooked shepherds pie, enough for 3 helpings EACH. How can you beat that.

can i also propose the worst food in the league award, and put forward the Flying Machine.

Not sure any venue is worthy. It's pre-packed rubbish at best. Jamie Oliver urgently required.

If I recall, the Surrey Cricketers used to serve up a pretty mean curry.

Worse food venue remains the The Harp in West Croydon. One night in 2004 for a league cup match they put out what can only be described as a tray of half cooked bones (probably some dead dog). The 'bones' were decorated and presented with some raw white onions. Was an awful experience.

BTW, I have only ever witnessed Dave 'Truey' Truan in 15 years of playing pool in the Croydon league divulge once in the ''food'' at a pool match. He once devoured one chip and took one bite of chicken leg. Both items were consumed funny enough at the Folly. For being able to tempt him into eating pool match grub - the Folly will get my vote on that achievement alone!

Yeah the cricketers did do a great curry.

But folly's new food is defiantly not pre-packed rubbish any more. home made, fresh from the oven dinners. unless we just went there on a good week?!

I think I've honestly pised myself Reading that LOL pure quality.

On a side note power don't give me that rubbish about pre packed rubbish, on the race night wasn't it you who ate the octopus co.ck in the Chinese LOL

Rileys is like a wild kill 60 people running to the table like they have been fed before plus fighting Gary Swettenham to fill his large gut is not a pretty site on a different tangent shouldn't there be food provided on KO cup games not every venue does this. Beechtree have an awful table but the curry was awesome. I think chad should have the final word as he is like a Hoover and tries the food everywhere he could be a royal faster of sorts LOL

I 'm not sure that Steve and Julie read the website so on their behalf thanks very much for the great comments. I have printed them out and will pass them on tonight. It seems a long time ago (it was actually only the beginning of this season) when I had to apologise to the Seamen for the quality of the food but since Steve and Julie have arrived there has been a sensational turnaround in quality. As Dogger says - no pre-packed rubbish is being served at The Folly - it is all great quality home cooking. Thanks to Steve and Julie from all the Folly team and naturally, you get my vote

Ok, so far we have:
The Folly
The View
The Warbank
Rileys Purley Way
The Beechtree

I'm sure there are a few more. Perhaps when we get to 10 we can start a poll.

It would also help if we could have a description of the offerings of each venue for those of us unlucky - or lucky - enough not to get to eat there. Feel free to go all Ainsley on us and tell us what you like about your favourite food venue. :gossip

any reason why the farley has been ignored? not a great eater of pool food myself but the farley always has a good spread and wide variety. Always lots of people with small sausages hanging out of their mouths so it must be tasty...

Why has the Farley been ignored? Other than the obvious that it's like eating out of a dog bowl? The only pub in the league that manages to fk up an orange juice and lemonade.

The tables down Suzys are cleaner than the plates in that place.

Well I will run the risk of having to hire a solicitor in order to post on this incredible site.
I have been really impressed with the food down The Gun of late. Last home game there was a massive vat of chilli with cheesey pasta and french bread and lots of grated cheese with enough for two helpings each and still some left over.
For the record, the Farley grub was pretty poor last time I was there (merely stating an opinion).

Unfortunately, Alan (and Sophie) from the William have had to move on and are no longer making the food.

I've eaten there (on pool night) twice. On the last occasion, Alan did a home baked Lasagna, which was absolutely spot on, with proper chips. The time before he produced a Jalfrezi with rice AND a meaty pie with crisp shortcrust pastry, both of which were absolutely stunning.

I've not eaten there since he left, but a decent chef like that will take some replacing!

I also understand that the team has folded with their departure, so anyone looking for a decent home cooked dinner, will probably have to get into the same league as the Folly!

By all accounts and according to what I have just read I think we should be taking a trip to a very lovely pub tucked away in the middle of nowhwere and serving up some mouth watering Gourmet. And if that's not enough, they do desert aswell.
Yes you've guessed it, The Flying Machine.
Suppose after watching some great pool and having contempment in our bellies, we could always go off plane spotting before heading back to reality.

Last night we had :-
A wide selection of chicken peices, cooked with loving care on the premises and delicately spiced to an authentic carribean jerk style.
Battered king prawns ( tails on ) gently placed in an aquatic array and rested upon a shineing bright silver platter.
Golden crispy mini spring rolls, cooked to perfection and again rested peacefully apon a silver platter.
Potatoe wedges (skins on ) golden brown and briefly dusted with a sea salt & cracked black pepper dressing.
Perfectly cooked to a crisp & golden constituency, rings of onion in it's perfect jacket.

A selection of the finest bread available cut into an assorment of shapes and sizes ( crust off of course ) enveloping a selection of grated cheeses and delicately rested upon a carefully chosen selection of seasonal mixed leaves.
A selection of dipping enhancers was available for those of the more distinguished palets.
A selection of multi-coloured after dinner desert cakes carefully cut to precision and and relaxingly layered upon a platter in a building block array.
If this was'nt enough for the most famished, our resident chiefs were on hand to take and further orders from a huge and varied menu.

I wonder why our pool tables were left abandoned !

This is'nt just food,
This was The Better Halfs food.

He was at Rileys PW last night and I think he saw the food come out and thought it was all his.
Katie has rustled up enough grub to feed an army and apparently there was a good spread but we didn't see any of it and had to order extra once the lions had finished off the main kill.

Disappointed to see The Gun is missing from the poll, they have made some truly incredible food for us this season and it would be nice if they got the recognition for it. There are some venues in the poll who serve some real crap in comparison. No offence to the Farley, it's all relative... :D

The View has won this poll with 35% of the votes, the closest venue to it was Rileys Ladywell with 4 votes

Would be good to propose a trophy for the best overall venue in the league at the next meeting

Factors to be included could be
1) Standard of food
2) Venue atmosphere
3) Standard of table(s)
4) Service from staff

This would be a way of the venues becoming more involved in the league as they would have their own trophy

Trophies could be voted on at divisional level, or for the entire league

The Eagle
HotShots
Lord Napier
Etc, etc.

-- and can't quite figure out how this poll malarkey works still cos our name is not even listed -- despite one of those visiting teams telling us we were lying third in the poll??

Not only that, but the poll says I've already voted when you've changed the venues listed on it. I would have voted for the Gun had it been listed at the time, but I was forced to vote for "other". This was months ago but instead of doing a new poll, you've resurrected the old dead one! WHY?

Posted by RasFas on 11-01-2010 19:27

The poll was created 2 months after I started this thread so there was plenty of time for everyone to recommend venues. No one mentioned the Earl of Eldon (except me) and, to date, we still don't know what they serve. I'm happy for them to be included in the poll if someone recommends them. Short of listing the entire venue list I don't know how else we could have done this.

I don't think we should start again but if it were possible to vote once a week we might get a more accurate reflection of whats going down well over the course of the season, ...Paul??

The issue for me is that you added the venue i wanted to vote for 2 months after I voted. I voted for "other" because my favourite venue wasn't there, but now that the venue is on the list I can't actually vote for it because I've "already voted."

I think it's a pretty pointless poll anyway because it's so subjective. Half the people in the league don't like proper food anyway, the venues who work hard to make good homemade food get outdone by those who buy in takeaway junk.

nuff said - respek to any venue who makes thier own hot FRESH food.
