The idea of shortening and incresing the odds is to narrow your liablilty and balance the book, you don't have to cut the price if other people are being backed as well. if you can do the odds correct, your book should balance itselfs out so that you are betting to around 105% (under 100% means the bookmaker will lose, over is the profit that should be made, most bookmakers on a racetrack bet between 101 - 115 on average).

With regards to the odds on the gambled people being backed you have to remember that what ever the worst result for the bookmaker is, he still has another 31 runners to beat that result.

With the bets on the outsiders, i would have thought the favs should be going out, the book still has the first 4 in the betting in it's favour.
