It appears that given the restrictions on entry, almost without question two of the previous three champions are unlikely to be able to try to defend or regain their titles. I realise that its a Croydon event, but as these people have supported most Croydon comps is their a risk that they will not do so for other comps and there could be repucussions when/if the interest from Croydon players eventually wanes?

Posted by Golden on 05-11-2007 18:27
#50

Yes there is always that risk but the priority will always lie with CDPL players . . The only reason the number of entires is being restricted is because we don't have 15 tables like we did for the 1st Open when over 100 people turned up . . Otherwise we'd have 128 there this time round . .

Long term there is potential to have this as an 'open' in it's literal sense and have a CDPL player only competition later in the year but what with the site move and other things it was left quite late and thought better to have an event of some description rather than not have one at all . .

One thing to think about . . How often has Steve Petty and Andy Breen come over to play in Croydon other than the Opens? Some may see it as them being bandits and stealing their money and have the exact opposite effect in detering CDPL players from entering 'their' competition? Just a thought . .

I'd be surprised if the interest waned to the extent where we couldn't get 64 players . .

Posted by Sass on 05-11-2007 18:28
#51

You may be right but from past experience I'm willing to stake that we won't have received entry money from 64 players by the 1st December.

We're not trying to alienate anyone here honest! :D

We will continue to take names beyond 64 so keep adding them on this thread.

i have to say i think that's a stupid idea...

if a player outside the cdpl wins they ain't gonna come to our presentation night...

why bother putting names on trophies... it's only necessary if the trophy is returned year after year...
when you pick up a trophy you know who you are so you don't need your name on it.
when i turn up at a comp i like to see the trophy i'm after... gives me a bit of extra incentive!

Posted by Sass on 24-01-2008 06:00
#101

You can still see the trophy you are trying to win. It just won't have a badge on it. The cost of the trophies doesn't come out of the prize fund and I get them engraved at my own cost. I therefore I canvassed opinion to see what people would prefer. Everyone else said having a trophy with their name on and having it presented made it a bit more special.

When I gave Andy Breen his trophy last year there were about 10 people left there to see it.

Posted by andye on 24-01-2008 18:03
#102

that's probably 9 more than left at a presentaion evening!!!

i'm not knocking the generousity of the offer, it's a very good one.
i just think a non cdpl player will not come to our presentation evening to pick it up...

if it were gonna be a croydon player it's 99% likely to be either from the eagles or hotshots and non of the hotshots are in it due to CofC's...
i tell you what sass... i'll win it this year and that solve the problem!!!

Sass, is the drawn being done on the day or like last year are you drawing 1st round in advance?

Posted by Sass on 29-01-2008 17:52

We'd like to draw it in advance as it will run more smoothly that way but we need a few people to stop telling me they will pay and start paying!!

I'm expecting to pick up a few entries at county on Sunday and I'm expecting at least 4 others to pay tonight.

I've added them to the list but I can't hold places for them (or anyone else for that matter) I'm afraid as it's not fair to everyone else.

There is a good chance that the competition will already be full by Tuesday so I suggest they pay at the club or via PayPal asap.

Can I ask what happens if you get to 64 and one extra person pays the full £15? It seems that you have one person who's paid just £10 . .

I guess he'll still be ok seeing as he has paid the majority of his fee . . Not worth kicking him out for the sake of ?5 . .

I will guarantee Knocky's fiver.

We're back up to 5 left due to a breakdown in communications somewhere in deepest darkest West Surrey . . . PayPal was the only winner

Umm, I posted that I've paid my £15, yet my name has now disappeared off the list and my post has vanished . . .

How odd.

What time will you drop it down there? I'll give them a call afterwards to confirm.

No idea. I certainly didn't delete your post although I may have taken you off the original list the other day when Danny told me you had decided to concentrate on the ladies event.

I'll add you back to the 'paid list'.

Fankoo!

I was actually still on the main list today, as I checked runners and ting.

Never mind - all done now.

Not your fault Sass.

Just make people aware that you might give your space up depending on how you feel, so if they wanna turn up on the day or keep their eye on the website in case you decide to concentrate on the comp as you said you might, then they may get lucky.

To be fair, everyone has had months to get their cash in.

No . . Just the one . . Look at the list at the start of the thread . . Matt Cooke & Dave Hall have just taken two of the remaining three spaces . .

Sorry, my fault. I must get my eyes tested. Im using the Neutron theme, and Lils is in green so it doesn't show up clearly against the background

Congratulations to Paul Hailston on taking the final place in this year's CroydonPool.com Open.

Sorry to those who haven't made it into the draw. There is of course a chance that people will not show up on the day so if you turn up you may get lucky! I have put Alan and Gerry down on the reserve list but obviously that depends on whether they decide to turn up on the day.

The draw for both the Open and Ladies events will be made at Rileys Purley Way on Tuesday 12th February after our league matches - probably around 11pm. Details will be posted on the site afterwards.

Well done Chatty. Lucky I texted him to warn him there was only 1 space left.

I think he owes me a pint or 2 :drunk:

They may still be in with a chance of making it into the competition if anyone doesn't show up on the day.

I've just text you Sass, Chris Stowell can't make it. he's really ill and doesnt look like he'll be up and about for the weekend. so he will drop out for one of the reserves to take his place.

Payment was made on behalf of James Petitte at the club on 29 January and his name should have been on the list and entered into the original draw.

Due to an error (probably mine!) his name was removed from the list and the competition was filled. He has therefore been re-instated as first reserve.

Apologies.
