That was me psyching myself up. It almost worked! I went 2-0 down and pulled it back to 2-2. After a long and tactical decider and me messing up a few chances, he scraped the win.

"Scraped a win" is kind of a metaphor. It is called imagery with words. In less complicated usage of the English language, he beat me in a close match of pool. What?s disrespectful about saying that?
