A fun bit of banter with Metin on Facebook has lead to me thinking who are the best players to have played in the Croydon league since it was formed?

I have played in the league since i was 14 and started playing in 1986!!

Obviously the rules have changed a lot over the years but who do you feel were the best players you have seen play since you have been playing in the league?

My top 2 players are as follows:

1) Jason Deegan
2) Mev Ali

There so many top draw players you can pick, you could probably name 50 greats 25 masters and 10 Guru's of the game but to pick just a few now your talking.
Individually speaking.......
Consistant winners
Consistant Trophies winners
Alway's up the top in the rankings, past and present.
Then you have your Exceptional Team Players and in my mind that's what is all about.

This has been done a number of times and the top 5 was pretty consistant and any of 20 or so more than could have been included and were in some peoples judgement. I think when everything was compiled in a vote Mev was declared the best.

My top 5 accross the same time as Scott would be.

1. Rod Altes
2. John Paul Burns
3. Eddie Taylor
4. Mev Ali
5. John Goldsmith

The other players that featured from present to past were:-

Kyle Pickett
Tony Jackson
Andy Esgrove
Myself
Graf Bishop (He wasnt on the list but would be on mine)
Jason Deegan (Cheetahs)
Terry Doke (Cheetahs)
Paul Whearty (Everyone)
Danny Evans (Prop/Eagles)
Ray Tolfrey Snr (Eagles)
John Broadway (cheetahs/Eagles)
Dennis Blosse (Rosendale/Drillers)
Steve Connors (Eagles)
Alan Dobbs (Rosendale/Drillers He wasn;t on the list either but was very good)
Jess Chatwell (Characters
Marvin Jones (Characters)
Ray Mills (Characters)

I deliberately left 'Whispering' Hugh Telford of the list, to give him the opportunity to confirm how many of the above he has beaten at money matches.

Many good players have played in this league over the years, and at no point has the best team available ever represented the league. Its a shame really, could have done some damage on a ntional level if everyone got involved. I am sure there are 10 or 15 more players that I have missed.

Wow!!! I thought this guy was joking when he posted this but I think he's deadly serious!! blah blah blah

I'm sure this is a thread about 'all-time' best Croydon players -not players who have spent 3 years in Div 5!! Come on mate... this is serious discussion!no

I won 21 out of 21 secretaries games in div 1, and was on holiday for the last, so using Neil's theory, I must be some kind of Pool God.

I'd like to known as Zeus Kelly from now on.

All Hail Zeus applause bow

I think the best player in league since I've been involved is Rod Altes.

Best player I've played in same team with is John Broadway

In all seriousness though, I echo what Shaggy said.

Also missing from that list would be Moray Dolan who briefly played for the Prop, don't know if that counts??

And Tommy Donlan who I haven't personally seen play, but who people like Shaggy who is a bit of an anarak of pool player knowledge, says is absolute class.
Played at the highest level of the game, and played well.

Me personally, I have always been a massive fan of Mev (Despite him not even being the best Turk in the league ;-) )

Not only did he / and still does play some quite simply sublime pool, but he conducts himself as a true sportsman at all times. You'll never see him punching tables / throwing a wobbly / being disrespectful to the oppo etc etc etc
A true great of Croydon pool and we're very fortunate to have him.

Sean has had his account attacked by Marc Burnett and I claim my ?5.

Tommy and Moray, would obviously be in the best 2 (mainly on the basis that they were formerly Number 1 and 8 on the pro Tour), but a combination of 30 frames between them doesnt count in my book.

I did.I knew there would be 1 or 2 that were obvious. I am sure the 'Fake' Mark Miller is happy that the 'Real' Mark Miller has been mentioned.

Only played in croydon this year however the best player I've seen here is Mev. He absolutely smashed me 7-0 at the weekend and I hardly played a bad shot! Probably one of the best players I've seen. Neils also handybig grin
